Session 6b: 40540SA Certificate IV in TESOLSession 6b: 40540SA Certificate IV in TESOL

TOPIC: Managing the classroom:

Below is a list of the topics that will be covered in session
6b of the EIP Certificate IV in TESOL course. The session
runs for 2 hours and includes power point presentations,
group and class discussions, along with in-class practical
exercises. The session will be delivered by an experienced
ESL teacher working in the field and draws on information
from the course text “How to Teach English” by Jeremy Harmer.

1.          The session will begin with a presentation and group
discussion on the teacher’s physical presence and
behaviour in the classroom, suggesting that how we
move and how close to the students we stand are
             matters of appropriacy.
2.          Next we look at the need for self-awareness to be able
to assess the affect of how we act in the classroom.
3.          Then we will examine the way we speak and use our
             voices in the classroom.
4.          This leads to a discussion and exercises on rough tuning
(adjusting the way you speak to your students). This is
an extremely important area, and something language
teachers can live or die by.
5.         Gestures, facial expressions and mime are discussed for
their practical use in a classroom.

(5 minute break)

6.    Giving instructions to students: You will be shown the
golden rules for giving instructions to students and
             making sure they understand them.
7.     Measure the relative importance of teacher talking time
(TTT) and student talking time (STT).
8.    Discuss the natural phenomenon of student translation
(both conscious and unconscious). Here we will also look
at ways of using this in the classroom.
9.    Discuss how to move through different stages of a lesson
             smoothly.
10.    Go through the different seating possibilities in the classroom.
11.    Go through different ways to organise students into groups,
             pairs, etc.
