TOPIC: Teaching Listening:

Below is a list of the topics that will be covered in session 8 of the EIP Certificate IV in TESOL course. The session runs for 6 hours ( a full day of the course) and includes power point presentations, DVD presentation, group and class discussions, and in-class practical exercises. It will also include mock teaching time where students get the opportunity to teach. The session will be delivered by an experienced ESL teacher working in the field and draws on information from the course text “How to Teach English” by Jeremy Harmer.

Session 8a (2 hours)
1.    This session will begin with a discussion on the important reasons for teaching listening, the different kinds of listening there are, and different sources for materials we can use in the classroom.
2.    This will be followed by a presentation on the 6 Listening principles, along with in class exercises and group discussions.
3.    We will then look in detail at 3 different listening exercises.
4.    Next, you will be shown several other ideas for creating listening exercises.
5.    Finally you will work in groups to complete the text chapter questions.

Session 8b (2 hours)
1.    In the first half of this session you will be working in groups and/or individually creating your own listening activities to use in lessons. Materials will be provided to you, but you may also bring materials of your own if you wish.
2.    In the second half of the session students will present and teach the listening activities they have made.

Session 8c (2 hours)
1.    This session will start with a presentation on using commercial materials in the classroom. It will instruct students on the best and most productive ways of using these materials in the classroom.
2.    Then you will be shown some examples of these materials and given opportunities to use them and discuss their benefits or weaknesses.
3.    The second half of this session is an interesting DVD on the history of English. In it you will discover some of the amazing occurrences that made English one of the most widely used and adaptable languages in the world.
